In this market, value depends on grade, lot, title and location, not weight alone.

Copper, aluminium, zinc, nickel, lead, tin, steel, alloys, concentrates and recycled metals are traded through chains connecting mines, smelters, refineries, mills, traders and warehouses. The commercial name of the metal is only the starting point. Composition, form, origin, availability, processing costs and delivery conditions determine what is actually being purchased.

The Name of the Metal Is Not a Specification

"Copper", "aluminium" or "steel" do not define sufficient quality for a transaction. Grade, chemical composition, dimensions, tolerances, mechanical properties, applicable standard, delivery form and industrial use must be clearly identified.

For steel products, the Mill Test Certificate, heat number and markings should correspond to the material presented. For refined metal, the producer, brand, lot and certificate of analysis must describe the same product.

LME Brand, Warrant and Stock Are Three Different Things

A brand approved by the London Metal Exchange has met requirements relating to quality, shape, weight and responsible sourcing. It does not mean that every company referring to that brand owns metal or has stock available.

An LME warrant represents an entitlement to a specific lot of approved metal held within the LME system. These warrants are now electronic. Photographs, PDFs or references to a recognised brand do not replace confirmation of the lot, location and control over the metal.

Concentrates Are Settled Through Measurement

For copper, zinc, lead or nickel concentrates, value does not depend on gross weight alone. Moisture, dry weight, metal content, payable metal, treatment charges, refining charges, recovery and penalties for impurities alter the final settlement.

The sampling method, sample preparation, laboratory and umpire procedure are central commercial elements. An apparently small difference in grade or moisture can have a significant financial impact.

Storage Does Not Resolve Title

Warehouse receipts, stock reports and holding certificates may describe existing metal without demonstrating that it is free for sale. The material may be financed, pledged as security, subject to a lien, reserved for another buyer or associated with more than one transaction.

The analysis must connect the operator, location, lot, weight, storage status, release conditions and the entity authorised to move the stock.

Scrap Requires Technical Classification

Scrap is not a uniform category. Mixed alloys, contamination, moisture, hazardous residues, radioactive material and differences in recovery can completely alter its value and transportability.

The contract must define grade, composition, tolerances, inspection method, rejection criteria and responsibility for material that may be classified as waste in the destination country.

The Price Starts With the Benchmark, It Does Not End There

LME references are adjusted for product form, quality, location, availability, regional premium, processing, financing and transport. A material discount requires an economic explanation consistent with the metal and the market.

Comparing the offered price only with an international quotation can conceal costs, penalties or limitations that materially reduce the real value of the transaction.

Origin and Responsible Sourcing

The declared origin should be followed through the mine or recycled source, smelter, refinery, mill and relevant intermediaries. The OECD framework applies risk-based due diligence to mineral supply chains, including risks involving conflict, human rights abuses, corruption and financial crime.

Standards such as ResponsibleSteel, the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative and the Copper Mark can strengthen the assessment. Certification of a producer or facility does not, however, replace verification of the transaction and the specific lot.
